The sun had just peaked over the horizon and its light began to fill the Canyon on that crisp September morning. I turned 60 this day and had a plan for the longest hike I’d ever done; the Rim-to River-to-Rim on the south side of the Grand Canyon. As we descended the South Kaibab Trail we were abruptly greeted by a herd of its inhabitants. As we passed one another, he stopped briefly and gave me a look as if to say, ‘Welcome to our home,’ and maybe, ‘Happy Birthday.’ It was hard to make out.
